Bussiness Skills

A bussiness skills course has been initiated to increase bussiness skills for Life Skills Graduates. This course is presented by Cobus Veldtman, a local specialist, and will be conducted over 12 weeks. Through the generous funding made available by Jenny Lenahan from JLP television, some seed capital will be available to this group to start micro enterprises with. The process of submitting a bussiness plan forms part of the curriculum and the submission of bussiness plans for approval will be a prerequisite for access to funding.

Extra Maths and Science classes

A need for high school children to receive extra maths and science tutorials was identified. Allan Cross, a local resident of the Magaliesberg area, spends two afternoons a week assisting teenagers with their maths and science. Already the positive effect of this intervention can be seen in improved results in these subjects.

Life Skills III

The third Life Skills course has been initiated at Masakhane. This course will be unique in that it is tailor made for illiterate participants. All course materials have been converted into pictures and verbal stories by Adult Educator, Sonja van der Vyver. The participants in this course will be compiling visual portfolios of their progress and are all very exited about their opportunity to take part in the Life Skills.

Computer Skills Training

The Life Skills I group has been for their second computer skills training session with Natasha Madhav, courtesy of SAB Ltd. and have come back full of enthusiasm. The participants have now covered Basic PC Skills and Excel. They will be attending a course in Word on the 8th of November. Kestrel Raik, Volunteer at Masakhane did some creative workshops with the youth at Masakhane. Recycled materials were gathered on a walk through the settlement and various items, such as beaded curtains and toys were made. See pictures by clicking on ''Children at Masakhane'

HIV testing and counselling

Voluntary testing and counselling was conducted by Sam Savage and the Masakhane HIV Drama group. A surprising number of people came to be tested. This is an ongoing intervention. A recent soccer finals event was used to promote the importance of testing. As a result the Masakhane soccer team has not only pledged their commitment to being tested for HIV, but have challenged other soccer teams to do the same. Contact has also been established with the NIKE Soccer Academy during a recent visit where Jenni Gillies from SAB introduced development practitioner, Sonja van der Vyver, Seune Phiri (Masakhane Soccer Captain)and some of the Masakhane soccer players to facilitators at the Academy. The Young Women's Programme

A programme focusing on marginalised young women in Masakhane is currently run by Social Worker, Sam Savage. This group of women have been identifiesd as vulnerable due to their social status and a lack of training. Following is an exerpt from the needs assessment conducted by Sam for this programme:

"According to the process of needs assessment and contact making that we have done, the greatest concerns of this group is not having jobs and battling to find gainful employment, as well as the issue of communication.
People hope for a better place to live in, they hope for more space and better services".

Creche Training

A qualified creche teacher, Motlalepule Mathikgwe is currently providing in house training to the trainee teachers at the Masakahne Creche. In addition to this, one of the trainee teachers, Daphne Maakwe has been selected for a government programme through which she will be going for intermittant sessions of more formal ECD training. Children are still receiving two meals per day at the creche and some gr.R materials have been purchased for tho older children who are getting ready to enter formal schooling next year. Sad loss of Youth Volunteer

Village Power has set a focus on the development and support of youth in the Masakhane community as one of their aims for 2010. Nhlanhla will be sorely missed by the people of Masakhane and the Village Power team.

Thank you to Louisa Staude and Cobi van der Smidt for their support in providing the high school children with dictionaries.

Small ways in which you can help to make a difference

In our develop the community at Masakhane we need the support of people who believe with us that there is a positive contrbution that can be made. A wise person once said that 'all it takes for the world to go to pieces is for good men (and women) to stand by and do nothing'. Here are some small ways in which you can help us to make a difference:

Spread the word - forward this newsletter to everyone you feel might want to help us make a difference!
Give us some ideas - input will be much valued and appreciated.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Masakhane has a commitee which forms a link between the community and the various development stakeholders. One of the commitee members has been allocated the portfolio of 'communicator'. For this project to run effectively, this communicator needs to be able to get hold of the relevant stakeholder in case of an emergency (such as the fire mentioned above) or just to relay issues and information as they arise. A sponsorship for airtime for this person could go a long way to ensuring that an effective channel of communication is maintained between the community and the people they work with.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last word...

Thank you to Su and Paul West for their commitment to this project

Thank you to Lizelle Viljoen for the donation of toys and clothes - quite a few little girl will go warmly dressed this winter because of it!

Thank you to Trudi for the donation of a bed to the family who lost everything in the fire - as soon as I get a gap I will come pick it up!

Thanks to all our friends and family who patiently endure our passions and ravings and give us the courage to keep going!

Take care.

Edutainer at Masakhane

The Masakhane community has received two edutainers from ABI and the Bright Kid foundation. This means that the community will have a fully equiped preschool classroom with tables, chairs etc. The second edutainer will be used for Adult training (see 'Life Skills Article' below) untill such time as the community centre is operational. A number of programmes, such as the Kare Gude ABET programme, which was implemented by the Department of Education last year, failed because of the distance which people needed to walk in order to get to their classes. This meant that mothers were away from their young children and also lost valuable time needed for household chores and gathering fuel and fetching water. The edutainer will certainly make education and training more accessable to the people, and especially the women in Masakhane. A community meeting has been held and a Parent's Forum established for the planning and implementation of the creche and issues relating to it. Parents expressed their gratitude that their young children would have a safe place to play and learn in the day. Thank you to Monica Narsee and Sarika Ponee FROM ABI and Nicholas Jaff from the Bright Kid Foundation for their efforts in this regard.

First Aid and Fire Training certificates ceremony

Through sponsorship from SAB people from Masakhane were provided with the oportunity to receive First Aid and Fire training in the village.

Two one-day courses in Fire Training and First Aid was each presented to 19 people. Participants received course material and could learn through the interactive lectures and video-material which Ben Supke from Firemed provided. Children were encouraged to sit in on the proceedings and received colouring-in books. Brightly coloured posters were distributed to households in the community.

Certificates were handed out at a ceremony to celebrate the arrival of two edutainers in the Village. Jenni Gillies and Duncan Gordon from SABMiller attended. An informative and entertaining programme was provided by members of the Masakhane Drama Outreach Programme. Adult members of this programme did a scene from their HIV/AIDS awareness programme. 7 Young boys from Masakhane did a 'gumboot dance' and a group of girls did a very well choreographed traditional dance. Gifts were presented to the visitors. See photos under 'Certificate ceremony' on the Masakhane blog:

http://themasakhaneproject.blogspot.com/

Masakhane Outreach Drama Programme

The Masakhane Drama incentive aims to bring to the wider community awareness of HIV/AIDS, VTC, Human Rights and Responsible use of alcohol. through the presentation of interactive plays which will consist of actors who have been trained as HIV/AIDS councelors. The partnership of the Department of health (Kgetleng District)has been secured in this. A full project proposal for this section of the Masakhane Project is available. It is important to note that this incentive will aim to provide the youth involved in it with an income as well as the personal empowerment which their involvement in this project will obviously bring about.

This project is managed by qualified social worker and specialist in community drama, Sam Savage.

Edutainer at Masakhane

The Masakhane community will be receiving an edutainer from ABI soon. This means that the community will have a fully equiped classroom with tables, chairs etc. A site has been selected and paperwork is being handled regarding this. This classroom will be invaluable as a training centre and will also be utilised as creche for young children.

First Aid and Fire Training completed

Through sponsorship from SAB people from Masakhane were provided with the oportunity to receive First Aid and Fire training in the village. Ben Supke from Firemed provided a two-day First Aid training course to 19 members of the community on 31 January and 1 February 2009. This training was conducted in a canvas and plastic shelter which serves as a church building in Masahane. Unfortunately due to the heavy rains, the structure had to be evacuated and the training was completed in the house of Seun and Boy Ngobeni. It is only through the perseverance of the participants and Mr the facilitator that this course was completed.

A one-day course in Fire Training was presented on Saturday 7 February. 19 people attended the course. This time the weather was more favourable and the course was presented under the tree where all the community meetings are usually held. Participants received course material and could learn through the interactive lectures and video-material which Ben provided. Children were encouraged to sit in on the proceedings and received colouring-in books. Brightly coloured posters were distributed to households in the community.

Certificates were issued and will be handed out at a graduation ceremony later this month.

( see blog item with same name for pictures and more information)
http://themasakhaneproject.blogspot.com/

This family includes two elderly people and two small children age 4 and 6. Nothing was left of their possessions. In response to the last newsletter they have been helped in the following ways:

They have received:
37 sheets of corrugated iron to build a new shack with
A wooden door

Some cement as the run off water from all the rain just washes into the house at the moment
Food to tie them over untill the end of the month
Mattresses
Anybody wanting to assist this family can contact me at 083 999 5017 or make a deposit with the word 'Fire-Aid Masakhane' in the 'description-box' Funds will be applied to helping this family. Last word...

Thank you to Hannelie Hartman for sponsoring the laminating of the First Aid and Fire Training certificates!

Thank you for a donation of 40 blankets donated by Tertius van Vuuren on behalf of the Rotary Club of Roodepoort. These blankets were received in response to the fire-incident at Masakhane. These were handed out to the family which was affected by the fire, the family which had lost their breadwinner, mentioned above and to other needy members of the Masakhane community.
